5 Awesome Senior Citizen Centers In Surprise AZ

The West Valley of Phoenix is a great place for seniors to live, vacation, or come as snowbirds. Lots of activities await seniors who come to our great towns of Surprise and Goodyear. The senior citizen centers in Surprise AZ and the Surprise AZ community centers provide a central location for lots of these activities. Every day we see the residents in our assisted living homes look forward to their next activity. So we really appreciate what these senior centers can do for other seniors living in or visiting Surprise.

Senior Citizen Centers in Surprise AZ

Here is a list of the senior citizen centers in Surprise or within a short driving distance. We’ve tried to include everything you need to know to maximize your enjoyment there.

1. Surprise Senior Center

The closest of the Surprise AZ community center is (naturally) the Surprise Senior Center. It is located at 15832 N. Hollyhock Street, Surprise AZ 85378. Membership in the center is $12/year for Surprise residents and $15/year for non-residents. It’s open from 8-4 Monday through Friday.

If you need some help with transportation to the Surprise AZ Community Center, the Valley Metro transportation service can help. They have three options:

·       The Senior Center Bus

·       Valley Metro Paratransit and

·       RideChoice

Once you arrive at the Surprise AZ Community Center, you can participate in a whole host of activities. You can see a calendar of their activities here.

The Surprise AZ Community Center also has a hot lunch program. There is no charge for the meals, but they do encourage contributions. Seniors over 60 can participate. The ‘suggested’ contribution is $2.50. Seniors 50-60 can also have the lunch for $5.00.

If you a senior and want to work out (which we highly encourage for good health), there is a very nice gym at the senior citizen center in Surprise AZ. Surprise residents pay $30 for the gym membership and non-residents pay $35.

2. Benevilla Life Enrichment Program

Benevilla is a non-profit senior citizen center in Surprise AZ with lots of volunteers. They were established in the West Valley in 1981 to offer help to seniors dealing with chronic conditions. Their main location is at 16752 N. Greasewood Street, Surprise AZ 85378.

Some of the activities Benevilla offers include:

  • Group exercise
  • Social games with others
  • Discussion groups
  • Outings
  • Arts and crafts
  • Cognitive stimulation activities

They also offer educational classes for caregivers. You can see classes scheduled here.

One really nice aspect about Benevilla is that they offer caregiver support groups for people caring for an aging loved one.

3. El Mirage Senior Citizen Center in Surprise AZ (sort of)

Branching out to senior citizen centers around Surprise, the El Mirage Senior Center is right next door. Located at 14010 N. El Mirage Road, El Mirage AZ 85335, the senior center provides care, assistance and resources to people age 55 and older.

The El Mirage Senior Center offers a lot of the same resources as the Surprise Senior Center. Hot meals are offered for $2.50. El Mirage really emphasizes good nutrition and health with their meals. If you want a hot meal, you will need to call (623) 876-4232 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve it.

El Mirage also offers a host of activities at the Center. You can see a calendar of the activities here.  Activities include:

  • Various classes
  • Games
  • Scrapbooking
  • Fitness activities
  • Dancing

4. Banner Olive Branch Senior Center

The Banner Senior Citizen Center in Surprise AZ is actually next door in Sun City and is run by the Banner Health System. It is located at 11250 N. 107th Avenue, Sun City AZ 85351. It is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 3 pm.

As of the writing of this blog, Banner has a fleet of 13 vehicles, including 2 buses to help seniors with transportation. They also offer hot meals and a range of activities for seniors. Since the Senior Citizen Center in Surprise AZ is affiliated with Banner Health, they can offer some medical services as well. Specifically they offer the following for seniors over 60, their spouses, and handicapped people of all ages:

  • Benefits check-ups
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Classes including exercise and nutrition programs
  • Counseling
  • Health and educational events
  • Health screenings
  • Legal assistance
  • Meal programs
  • Trips and entertainment

5.    Peoria Community Center

If you don’t mind expanding the ring of senior centers around Surprise, you will find the Peoria Community Center about six and a half miles away. Unlike the Surprise AZ Community Center, the Peoria center has programs for all ages, which means Seniors might be able to socialize with different generations – it could be a lot of fun!

The 26,000 square foot facility has a lot of activities:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Dancing
  • Games
  • Wellness programs
  • Community events
  • Lectures
  • Classes
  • Fitness in their gym
  • Pool tables

There is no membership fee for either residents or non-residents of Peoria. You can find specific activities for people over 50 here. Events start around 9:30 am and people can have lunch during the activities. The Community Center would like a $3 donation for lunch.

The Community Center also has field trips. They publish the schedule of trips on their website. And they can provide transportation from the Community Center for the trips.
