Surprise Assisted Living – Common Questions Answered

Assisted living facilities and homes are very common in our community. That’s because Surprise has a large demand for senior services. Surprise assisted living businesses are there to help meet this demand. Not just Surprise either. The Northwest Valley communities of:

  • Sun City
  • Sun City West
  • Sun City Grand
  • Goodyear
  • Peoria
  • El Mirage
  • Glendale

and several other communities farther West, have wonderful and vibrant senior populations. As these seniors age, they may need a little more assistance. That’s where Surprise assisted living homes can really help.

What Can Surprise Assisted Living Homes Do?

Both Surprise assisted living facilities and group homes are senior care communities. They provide an extra hand in performing daily tasks, such as

  • Bathing
  • Eating
  • Dressing, and
  • Medication management

Assisted living residents generally do not need a 24-hour medical assistance or skilled nursing care. Many of the Surprise assisted living homes or facilities also have entertainment for the residents to keep them active and engaged.

The Surprise assisted living businesses can provide a more affordable option than many home health services. Having a caregiver for just one person in their home can run around $10-$15,000 per month. Surprise assisted living businesses are much less.

Surprise Assisted Living DemographicsAccording to the Statistical Atlas website, the areas around Northwest Phoenix listed above have the highest percentage of seniors (70+) in Arizona. Generally, an average assisted living resident is an 80-year-old female who just recently moved from a private living arrangement to an assisted living facility. She has an income of around $30,000 per year.

An average Surprise assisted living resident usually stays for two to three years. Then they may move into a nursing home. However, other ways a resident may leave a Surprise assisted living home include:

  • Moving back to their homes (what we most want for our residents)
  • Financial problems (check out our free guide for ALTCS to help defray the costs)
  • Moving to another assisted living home or facility (we want to minimize this -it’s hard on seniors)
  • Staying in a hospital (we definitely want to minimize this)

Your Loved One’s Rights

Assisted living homes and facilities enable your elderly loved one to remain independent while still providing them with the level of care they need. As a resident in most Surprise assisted living establishments, your loved one will be in a supportive, loving, and safe environment. Your loved one’s rights as a resident in a Surprise assisted living facility include:

  • Freedom from abuse and neglect
  • Being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve
  • Allowing them to practice or abstain from religious beliefs
  • The right to privacy
  • Socialize with other people inside and outside of the facility
  • Control over their own finances
  • For a detailed list regarding the rights of your elderly loved one, head over to assistedlivingfacilities.org.

The Arizona Department of Health Services (AzDHS) monitors all the Surprise assisted living businesses. They will often show up unannounced to inspect a home. The results of these inspections are posted on the AzDHS website and are available to the public.

Living Arrangements, Services, and Amenities

Many Surprise assisted living homes are much like Grandma’s home. Our homes fall into this category. The homes are actual residential houses in a neighborhood. Residents have their own semiprivate or private rooms, depending on their preferences and budget.

The rooms are furnished. That doesn’t mean residents and families can’t bring their own furniture and other possessions. In fact, families are encouraged to bring stuff. The more that the family brings, the more the resident will feel like they are living in their own home.

The larger Surprise assisted living facilities may feel more like an apartment building. Many of the ‘apartments are very nice. They can offer anything from a private studio apartment, one-bedroom shared apartments, dormitory-style bedrooms, or other larger private suites. Many of the facilities can provide a continuing range of care. The range includes independent living, assisted living, and even skilled nursing care. All in one location.

The services offered by all Surprise assisted living businesses vary. Here are some of the basic ones common to practically all of them:

  • 24-hour security
  • Housekeeping and maintenance
  • Group exercises
  • Transportation services
  • Wellness programs
  • Social services
  • Assistance with day-to-day activities such as dressing, bathing, eating, and medication management
  • Laundry services
  • Recreational activities
  • Meal preparation
  • Cognitive stimulating activities
  • Basic health services and medication administration
  • Emergency call systems in room and common areas

Most Surprise assisted living homes and facilities work with health agencies and hospice providers. They can easily provide residents their services when needed.

Payment Options and Fees

Most of the services mentioned above are generally included in the base price. Additional costs apply to other services such as manicures, pedicure, haircuts, and other activities. Most Surprise assisted living businesses also require the families to provide gloves, diapers and wipes. Assisted living facilities vary from one another so the fees are billed differently.

Other facilities may offer tier pricing based on services requested by the senior, all-inclusive monthly payments, and/or the like. Generally the larger facilities will be more expensive than individual group homes. However, they will also often offer more services.

You can use different government programs to cut the cost of assisted living. Arizona offers public assistance through Medicaid, Social Services Block Grant, and Supplementary Security Income programs to name a few. The Arizona program covering these Government subsidies is called the Arizona Long-Term Care Service or ALTCS.

Long-term care insurance may also cover some of the costs of assisted living. Medicare does not. Veterans can use their Aid and Attendance benefits to pay for a portion of assisted living costs. Contact us if you need more information about Aid and Attendance.

Quality of Care

We offer a free guide on how to conduct your assisted living search. As of now, there are not any federal regulations governing assisted living facilities. The AzDHS website should help you navigate all the Arizona State regulation.

We also wrote a blog post on how to find the right assisted living home for your needs. The post has a lot of lessons learned from the families of our residents. They let us use their advice to help you make your search the most productive and easiest you can. After all, they (and we) understand how tough a time this can be.
